Profile

Proud pet parent of:
Mr. Katt, 3 year old, neutered male DSH, adopted from a shelter. He is proof that neutering does NOT make a cat fat, lazy, or boring. His personality has not changed at all, except that he now, in parallel with being aggressive in his desire to play, is also much more demonstrably affectionate. So he is now, so much of all that I could want in a cat, he is crazy, and affectionate, depending on his mood. "Behavior starts with Nutrition!"
Pet likes:
Running, running, running...
Also, "hiding" behind the doorsill and popping in the air like a top, fuzzed out and ready to attack... !
Pet dislikes:
Continuously BORED. He is quite troublesome, with an insatiable appetite for play, investigating the unknown, and surveying his territory through second-floor apartment windows. Also continuously disappointed at my height: I am over six feet, but in an old apartment (with high ceilings), standing on my shoulders fully stretched-- he is still six inches shy of the ceiling, which he insists on investigating.
Pet’s favorite spot:
A carpeted window shelf in the kitchen (one of many), from which he can survey the bird feeders I've placed below and the trees which arch in disarray nearly to the window itself, and from which neighborhood squirrels (and the occasional cat) seek every opportunity to harrass him.
Pet’s favorite toy:
Home made "bird" toy, made from collected feathers from various birds (hawk, blue jay, gulls, sparrows, etc.) glued together, tied to an elastic string, and affixed to a long wand. This toy can be made to "fly" and "flutter" amazingly like a real bird. I am forced to hide it away between sessions, it would not survive otherwise. However, it is not unusual to arrive home to find the desk doors open, and the toy in some distant room. In fact, there are a fair amount of his toys that simply cannot be "left out," but must be hidden in drawers lest they be destroyed in short time. Saving the occasional round-up, the rest of the house is littered with his toys.
Pet’s sweetest moments:
He has a split personality. I am the surrogate playmate, and am subject to attack at any moment. But my father, who is elderly and cannot "play" aggressively, he instead follows and "bunts" with unrelenting affection.
My pet is unique because:
He is nuts. And also, he has an off-center spot instead of a normally pigmented nose.
"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats."
--Albert Schweitzer

Help Me Live My Life to It's Fullest, and for Me to be Active, Funny, Charming, and Interesting! I Need a High Protein/Low Carbohydrate Diet with NO GRAINS! Please Don't Feed Me Grocery Store Junk Food, and Do Not Succumb to the False Notion and Advertising Hype that Dry Food is Necessary or Valuable for My Dental Health!

Remember: BEHAVIOR STARTS WITH NUTRITION! Help your feline family members realize thier full potential, stay active, slim, and avoid chronic and potentially deadly health issues by acknowledging their nature as obligate carnivores: ridding their diets of grains, and working to reduce or banish dry food from your feeding protocols.

I will urge, implore, BEG… anyone with a cat to learn the basics— just the basics, really: about feline nutrition. Once you learn the basics, you will never need to ask anyone, “what food should I buy?” because you will have no need to: you will make the decision for yourself simply by reading the label on the can or package. With this knowledge, you will be empowered to know how manufacturers manipulate labeling to make food look more nutritious than it really is, and how so-called “premium” brands are so often dominated by useless, inferior, and unhealthy ingredients.

As part of my personal quest, I would also like to suggest, that cat owners commit to being less concerned (more happy?) with a bit of a messed up home, if it will provide stimulation for our cats! The worst enemy of our cats (and dogs) is boredom! Why do we tolerate our cat being "lazy" or unexicting? Because the most exercise many cats get is walking to the food bowl! How about moving that food bowl around every day, to simulate hunting for food in the wild? How easy it is, to drape a sheet over a table or a few chairs, and make an instant "cave" (didn't Dad do this for us when we were kids, as a quick indoor playhouse on a rainy day?), pull up the backs of the couch cushions on an angle to make a "tunnel," pile some boxes in an ever-changing pyriamid of "steps" to make a "cat's mountain"? What about carpeted resting shelves at the windows? The list can go on and on. Cats want security in their domain, and commonly fear "change" (moving) as a "loss of territory." But within that territory (your home or apartment) they often LOVE incremental change, or the chaos of moving stuff around. My cat is energized to the max during the setup or collapse of Christmas, for example-- all those cartons, bags, places to hunt and investigate, and of course, doing his best to destroy the tree. I grieve for him when I must take down that tree, he so loves hunting and hiding under its "drip zone." During the cleanup, he's found the huge pile of used tissue, and it is a noisy, crinkly, playhouse, where he will hunt that rogue jingle bell that's become detached from some unidentified ornament or perhaps a Santa? He LOVES chaos! So I'd like to see those "perfect" (but BORING) houses be excused, and why not, on your way to work, rearrange the dining or kitchen chairs into a different grouping than yesterday? Why not turn over an upholstered chair for the day (who cares!) to provide a new place to hide or play? Why not hold onto that empty box the new DVD player came in, just for a while-- as a new playhouse? Why not? Who cares about a bit of mess! Your cat will benefit from the mental stimulation, and burn calories to boot, as he plays in this new, exciting, ever-changing world you can create for him, in just a few moments a day.

"To be, contents his natural desire,
He asks no angel's wing, no seraphy's fire;
But thinks, admitted to that equal sky,
His faithful (cat) shall bear him company."
--Alexander Pope: Letters to H. Cromwell

PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING A SHELTER DOG FOR A WALK TODAY. You need not learn his name, but he is there now, as we read this, waiting for some friendship. The ability of an animal to cope with the stress of a shelter environment often determines his ability to survive, and his eventual adoptability. Volunteers help animals cope: you can save a life with a few hours of your time.

Your quotes, your insights, you...bring me hope. I have read all books by J. Moussaieff Masson. Devistating, beautiful, wonderful books. I will now go purchase the cat books you mentioned on nutrition. I am on my own spiritual and nutritional journey; may as well take my cats along. Thanks for your intelligence, the way you write, so eloquently. I am happy to have come to know you. Terrie

Uh oh.........Vlad is gone. Dag nabbit!!
We've just lost one of our best contributing members.
Vlad,
You will be sorely missed. You always prompted me to think a bit deeper and added welcome stimulis to any discussion. I hope this is but a reprieve, not permanent. I shall miss you, my friend, Vladimir.
I picture you now, quietly brooding by the firelight, excellent brandy in the snifter near your comfortable chair. Cat lying contentedly in your lap, purring as you absently stroke him.
(remember, we got a chuckle over that scenario once!)
Don't forsake us for long Vlad.

Thanks for dropping by my "discussion" page. I too wish you could attend the WALK..We had a very good turnout at the other 2 Walks...And the best thing of all was the many pitbulls all gathered together and not one single incident....Hopefully this will help show all the people who think so negative of this breed, that they are really just another breed of dog...They are born to kill...born to attack...They were born to be loved and cared for just as any other breed....It is the humans who have and are continuing to use, abuse, mistreat and destroy this breeds image...I often ask myself "What is this world coming to when people actually think it is OK to BAN a breed", especially when the breed ISNT THE PROBLEM...It's a sad sad world when criminals are allowed to use a dog (any breed) for dogfighting and the justice system gives them a slap on the wrist while the Death Warrant was signed, sealed and delivered for that poor dog who was a victim from day one and then he/she is put to death..It's like that saying, "damned if you do and damned if you don't"...These animals dont stand a chance unless we all step up and try to make a difference....Thanks for visiting my page...

Our voices were heard. They are banning everyone below the age of 13, deleting groups, and giving people warnings about profanity and aguements

The more I think of it..I don't even think I was that ignorent when I was that age..but then again I didn't have the internet and back when you and I ( even tho we are diff in age ) were at a young age times were way different then now. I like I have said I see it in all angles..I do think they have a right to speak and voice their questions and ideas. I do not think they are dumb..just ignorent in both ways ( rude and to ignorent to learn and listen ) I always thought oh wow great more people joining aspca more people to support animals but now that I see over 11 thousand I much rather the 3 thousand we had when I started. Seemed a lot calmer and was easy to help. Now 80% of that 11 thousand are kids that are just plain ignorent and groups being started for fans of bands. I can't stress giving up on some discussions and I can't stress this isn't a site to join just for friends or non animal lovers. I do except all discussions but another thing that bothers me besides kids is people that come on here with discussions such as ( quote from you ) my cats eye got poked out by a stick..what should I do? once again that goes back to common sense..call your vet or else get your animal to the animal er. Do not sit on a computer and expect someone to magically make your cats eye better. Doesn't work that way.

Anything I may write in this comment isn't suppose to sound ignorent but I do got to say is it even worth fighting with a young girl who obviously will not learn nor listen? I been really trying to hold myself back from that animal lovers unite or whatever its called. It has been bothering me only because the more you write the more she writes and the same thing comes out of these young kids mouths is "why are you mean?" I just do not understand why they can not understand all of our points. What she says makes me want to bang my head off a wall because none of them can understand or else they do not want to understand. I did see you wrote about them not adding to other discussions and as soon as I read that bam they replied to a crap load of discussions. Just because they think replying is gonna help its not. The more they reply the more they fight with you because they are right you are wrong. I see a kid respond to a discussion I been trying to hold myself back from even going in it. I do not think we will ever win this war between adults/pre adults vs. kids. Its to the point where its very sad that this site has became useless. All your hard work means crap all because as you said and as she has quotes "she doesn't have all fricken day" then you know what? They should get off this site because they are useless here.
